19 years after Minneapolis slaying, a DNA match from Brenda Pikala fingernails. Skin found under her fingernails from the assailant has led to murder charges.

The above is not my article as it was taken from the Sharron blog however the idea of skin under the fingernails is definitely an applicable idea to this case. RH.

What is it?

Familial DNA searching is based on the fact DNA profiles of relatives are more likely to contain similarities than unrelated people. A partial match could mean the DNA of a convicted offender in the database is a sibling, parent or child of the suspect. Due to testing on the male Y chromosome, men can be eliminated or linked as a relative.

Scientists examine information on 13 locations on the human genome on two genetic markers, one from each parent. A match between 13 and more is considered a possible relative. A perfect match is when all 13 locations of DNA found at a crime scene match the 13 locations of a person's DNA sample.

How it works

California's DNA Data Bank consists of DNA profiles from convicted criminal offenders and a database of unknown crime scene (evidence) profiles.

When a crime scene profile is searched against an offender database, a match is declared if the crime scene profile is a perfect match to the offender's DNA profile. If the profiles are not exact but match around 15 of 26 DNA indicators, the source of the crime scene profile may be a relative of the offender in the database. This is partial DNA matching, or familial searching, where the goal is to find a relative of the suspect who may lead investigators to the suspect's identity.

California is the first state to have a policy on familial searching, while a few other states are exploring the issue. Nevada has no law regarding the issue.

The name of the suspected relative offender may be released to the investigating agency if the California protocol outlined below has been followed;

The crime scene DNA profile is a single-source profile.

The case is unsolved and all investigative leads have been exhausted.

A commitment is made by the agency and the prosecutor to further investigate the case if the name of the potentially related offender is eventually released.

Testing on the DNA evidence is done on the Y chromosome, which produces common male profiles in a paternal lineage, and has a biological match with the offender's Y chromosome profile.

Local DNA Family Ties

Washoe County DNA scientists examining evidence from the 2000 sexual assault and murder of Krystal Steadman, 9, concluded that DNA linked a 19-year-old man's father to the girl's sexual assault after his son was arrested for her murder and kidnapping. Thomas Robert Soria Jr., then 19, was arrested hours after Steadman's body was found down an embankment along U.S. 50. DNA comparison ruled him out as the man who raped the girl, but was so similar that it indicated the DNA profile was from his father, Thomas Robert Soria Sr. He later killed himself in jail, while his son was sentenced to a life term.

James Michael Biela was arrested Nov. 25 for the rape and strangulation of Brianna Denison, 19, after scientists examined his 4-year-old son's DNA and found it closely matched the DNA in the Denison case. Biela was arrested after scientists found his DNA was a perfect match to the evidence.

My heart still aches for Sharron, I grew up with her at the boys and girls club and hung out at the restaurant at ash and wellington. I keep her picture with my family photos on my computer, I still miss her after all these years. She will stay there with me always. Thank you so much for sharing these memories with me. I've shared this with my two daughters as well. All my love to your family. Happy New Year

Although I didn't know Sharron, the day she went missing was a day I will always remember. In 1975 I was a 15 year old young girl who lived in Ville LaSalle. What happened to Sharron could have happenened to anyone of us. I was very naive until that day. Never thought twice about travelling on the bus, metro by myself or walking down certain streets alone at night. Yes, it was so very sad and is still sad to this day because no one has ever been convicted of this horrendous crime after all these years. My heart goes out to her family and to those who were close to Sharron. I like to think that Sharron's story though horrible, may have prevented something similar happening to another young girl. For myself, I was certainly more aware of my surroundings and took precautions when necessary. RIP have people who will always love and remember you and keep your memory alive.

This information might be important to you. there was a guy who lived in the point his first name was louis but I cannot remember his last name but do remember that it started with a P. This guy spent time in jail in Ontario for raping a women he is a bad dude. He fits the discription of the person who attacked the women on Ash Avenue he has a brother by the name of Joey. Maybe some one can come up with the last name.

I wonder if the police ever compared the dna from Sharron's case and the Tammy Leaky case to see if they match or not. Would be interesting to see. Both incidents happend in the Point.

Thank you to those of you who have written in Sharron's guest book, who have given your thoughts, your well wishes and prayers.
Every bit of information that we receive we take in..and search ..and look for answers?
Sometimes is the smallest things that can brake a case.
And this case is NOT closed, has never been.

Rumor went around the point in the 80's that the person who could be responsible for such a terrible crime was a guy who showed signs that he was very violet.I myself don't believe that I ever met this creep, and if I do, I certainly (thank god) don't remember him.I was told that he could be capable of doing such a horrible thing.I don't want to accuse anyone but how can I throw you out a name without blaming him. What if he didn't do it? The last name was Abraham.Unfortunatly, I heard that he died. If there was a way to get DNA from one of his family members. So sorry for your loss

Never said the Prior's gave up. That is horrible to say. The police have not done anything with this case in how long? Don't mix my words ever by saying the Prior's gave up.
